Promotion Dance Disaster
Dear Guidance Guy,
School just ended yesterday and I graduated my middle school. We had a very nice cermony and an awesome dance. The dance was really cool, however I was watching for the guy I like the whole time. I have liked this guy for a year and a half, however I haven't spoken to him in a year.
I saw him dancing with some other girls and that made me upset. I looked beautiful last night. I had my hair blow dryed, curled, crimped, I had makeup on, I had contacts on, I was in a pretty dress and shoes, and I had a smile on my face. Yet he didn't notice me. My friends wanted me to ask him to dance but I couldn't. Not in front of the whole school, not basically confess that I like him in front of the entire school.
This summer I am taking summer school to get ahead. His best friend is taking it too. What should I do?
Thanks,
Confused Summer School Girl

Dear Confused,
I'm sure you looked beautiful, and I'll bet someone really nice (and cute) noticed how pretty you were. But if you haven't spoken with this guy in a year, it doesn't seem like he would come up to you like magic. It takes more than that to get things started, especially for a 13 or 14 year old guy.
What's the worst thing that can happen if you ask him to dance? Some of the school (the ones who pay attention to these things) might find out you like him. So what? I'm not telling you to dance with him, only to not worry about what people might think. They're going to think things no matter what you do, so you might as well enjoy yourself!
Do you like his best friend who will be at summer school? If so, you can build a friendship with him. But it's not a good idea to use the best friend to get to the guy you like. You wouldn't like it if someone used you to get to a friend of yours, so please don't do that to someone else.
Here's my suggestion: remember how good and special you felt at the dance that night. Take that feeling with you everywhere you go. You will be so attractive that the right person will show up and REALLY like you. If "Mr. Wonderful" doesn't see it, it's his loss.
Have a great summer,
The Guidance Guy
