Hurt Inside

Hi Guidance Guy,

I have a huge problem. There is this horribly mean girl at my school. She makes my school life awful and she makes me cry every single day! I will tell her as best I can something like "please stop being mean to me." but then she'll say something like "what the heck are you talking about? We're best friends." This upsets me so much. I've tried ignoring her so hard, but she won't leave me alone, because she insists we're friends. I've even talked to our school guidance counselor, so she talked to the bully. But it didn't help. I really don't want to cry anymore. Please help me.

Thank you,
Hurt Inside

Dear Hurt,

It's good you recognize this girl is a bully, because that's what it sounds like to me. Bullies usually won't listen when you ask them to stop because they enjoy the hurt they cause. That's why they are bullies. Ignoring doesn't always help either, as you found out. The "best friends" comments show she either has a strange sense of friendship or is teasing you.

Go back to your guidance counselor and let her know exactly what's going on, including how it makes you feel. And let your parents know as well. Bullying doesn't have to just be physical. It can be emotional pain as well. If this doesn't work, go to the principal and let him or her know everything that's happened, including the fact that you spoke with your counselor and things haven't gotten better. Meanwhile, keep ignoring this girl. Don't even ask her to stop being mean. Don't give her anything she can use against you.

Best of Luck,
The Guidance Guy
