Friend Stealer
Dear Guidance Guy,
I have a friend that I've been friends with for like forever. She was my best best friend. A new girl came to our school last year in 5th grade and she was just friends with her. This year they are in the same unit and they are obsessed with each other. I've been trying to keep friends with her but everyday she has plans with her and is talking to her on the phone or online. I tried to become friends with the girl but I just can't stand what they do together. Now their claiming to be sisters and have only know each other for a year! I get so angry so I went to her and told her how I felt. She said I was being way too jealous and didn't care. I don't know what to do!!!

Dear Lost,
Do you have any other girls (or guys) you are friends with? Because it looks like these two have made a choice about how they feel. It doesn't seem fair, but they are in the same unit (and I'm guessing you're in a different one) so they are naturally close. They seem to have a lot in common.
I understand why you would feel jealous. You had a good thing going with your friend and then the new girl came and seemed to take it away. It's great that you tried to be friends with this other girl and I'm sorry it didn't work out.
Let me ask you a question: if a new girl came to your school and YOU became like sisters with her, would you want your old friend to try and get in the way? I'm sure you wouldn't. And you wouldn't like your old friend any less. In fact, sometimes when friendships are extremely close they can burn out very quickly too. That may or may not happen in this case.
The best thing you can do is to keep being friends with your old friend, even if it's from a distance. And keep yourself open to making new friends or being closer with the friends you already have. Please try not to be angry...this will just make it more difficult for you to make the friends you so badly want to have.
Thanks for your letter,
The Guidance Guy
