Used To Be Popular

Dear Guidance Guy,
I'm missing a lot of school and I'm horrible in math I'm afraid I'm going to fail grade six. Also people are pressuring me to join after school activties but I just feellike going home. In my other school I was really popular but now I feel I'm ugly. I sang in my other school's play and everybody said I should go professional. But other people say I have a bad voice!

I don't know what to think, what about you?

Used To Be Popular

*****

Dear Used To Be,

It looks like you're going through what many 11 and 12 year old's go through. The only problem is that you have to do it with more pressure because you're in a new environment with different people. So pay close attention because what I'm about to tell you is important...

You don't have to be popular to anyone except yourself. As you get older you'll understand that people will come and go. Friends will move in and out of your life. Some will stay for a long time - maybe forever - and some will come and go like a summer day. You don't need anyone to think you're smart, good looking, a good singer or anything else. Of course it's nice when people give you approval. But you don't NEED it. You have yourself, which is the most important thing.

If you like singing, sing no matter what anyone else thinks. If you like activities, join them. If not, then don't. Pick the ones that are right for you. You didn't turn ugly when you got to your new school. And you didn't get bad in math when you got there either.

My guess is you're missing a lot of school because you feel badly about yourself when you're there. This can turn into a big problem unless it gets fixed soon. Ask your parents to put you in touch with a counselor who can help with this kind problem. There are lots of good ones.

You have a great future ahead of you. Once you remember what a good person you are, the right people will show up in your life. That's a promise!

All The Best,
The Guidance Guy
