Student Recovery
Hey Guidance Guy!
I am failing all my high school classes and my principal is the worst thing that could ever happpen in this world. She won't give me a chance to make up five credits. So far summer school makes up two credits however I don't have a way to make up the other three. I was given the option of starting this class called student recovery where they take you out of all your classes and put you in a one on one class where it is much easier for you. You are given a package from all your classes to work on it step by step with more understanding of how to do things which I think will benefit me a lot. My principal wont let me do that so I need your help to tell me what I should do. Would you be able to help me?

Dear Mischievous,
The Student Recovery class sounds like a perfect plan for someone who needs a second (or third or fourth) chance. But I don't understand a few things. In your letter you said you were given the option to take this class. Then you said your principal won't let you do it. Did someone else say it was OK but the principal said no? If so, I would go back to the person who said it was OK the in the first place and ask if they would talk with the principal about your case.
But let's assume the principal has a reason for not letting you take this class. And let's assume your parents are involved as well. One thing I would think about doing is asking her what the reason is for not letting you Student Recovery. Listen carefully to what she has to say. If you are serious about wanting a second chance at getting credits, it's important to know what she thinks. Something went wrong that caused you to need all this make up work. What was it? If your principal has some ideas how you can improve, take them seriously!
And here's what's cool: if she thinks you're taking things seriously, she might just look at you differently and possibly change her mind. Even if she doesn't this may start you on the road to being a better student.
Best of Luck,
The Guidance Guy
