Question From a "Geek"

Hey Guidance Guy,

This question may sound like I'm a geek, but oh well. I am probably the only student in high school who isn't on a team or in a club. I can't even catch up with all my school work (when I'm not even on a team), I seroiusly don't know how other people do it. Everybody tells me that I won't get into college if I am not on a team and that scares me. I don't know if they are just saying that or not but I thought that since you are a guy and knows stuff I thought I might ask you. Well, my question really is will I ever get into college if I don't join a team?

Dear Geek,

There are two answers to your question, and they are both good news for you. You definitely, 100% don't need to be on a team to get into college. And you don't need to be in a club or any other activity. People should join teams, clubs and other things because they want to, not because they feel like they have to.

And that brings us to the second part of the answer. Not being on a sports team has nothing to do with being a geek. If that were true, most people would be geeks. Look around your school. Unless it's very small, fewer than half of the students are on a school team. But lots of people are on the school newspaper, band, chorus, debate team, chess club, etc. There's no such thing as a club for Geeks. Even someone with no activities isn't a geek.

Here's my opionion: a geek is someone who is so uncomfortable with themselves they make themselves feel better by looking down on other people. Find your own activities or other things that make you feel good. And get good at communicating it to other people. This may make you a better candidate for college, but will DEFINITELY make you more interested and interesting.

Your Pal,
The Guidance Guy
