Dear Guidance Guy,

Hey, I have a problem. My best friend is being really mean to me now, and is a jerk. I told her once that I don't like it when she is mean to me, but she didn't care at all. She only is nice to me when she wants to be cool and hang out with me. She is mean to all my other friends too. How do I tell her that I don't want to be her friend anymore?

Dear Want,

You don't have to tell her anything. Just don't look for her in school. Spend your time with other people. Stop calling and IM'ing her. Just gently let her out of your life. When you do this, don't be surprised if she asks you if something is wrong. Then you can tell her the truth. She may realize what she's doing and try to be nicer to you. Then you get to choose if you want to be friends again. Or she may choose to argue with you. And you don't have to have the argument. You can tell her it's better if we're not best friends and leave it at that.

Isn't it cool to have choices?
