I Want to be a Skateboarder

Dear Guidance Guy,

At my school most people are skateboarders. I am not and I tuck my shirt in and stuff like that. I have one person that is kind of my friend but my momdoes not want me to be friends with him. I want to befriend him and become a skateboarder. I need help on becoming a skateboarder and help in how totell my parents that I want to become a skateboarder. They are used to me being like I am now and I have never changed. They will think that this so called friend is what made me do this. Help!!

Dear Stuck,

As people grow up and change they try on different roles. It looks like you want to try on one of those roles right now and be a "skateboarder." What I think you (and your parents) will find is that there isn't much difference in kids even though they call themselves different things. You don't need to call yourself a skateboarder or anything else to be friends with someone.

My first question to you would be to find out if you like skateboarding. Do you own a skateboard? It will be easier to do what the "skateboarders" do if you have one. If not, trying to hang out with this guy will be tough. You might want to take care of that problem first.

How do you know your parents won't accept you changing? Most parents understand that kids do different things as they get older. As long as you aren't using a skateboard to knock people over and steal from stores, I don't think they'll be too upset. Of course, keeping good grades and staying out of trouble won't hurt either. How about tucking your shirt in when you're around your parents and teachers but leaving it tucked out when you're just around friends?

You might want to try inviting this new friend over your house and letting your parents get to know him. If he's a good kid, they'll probably see him as more than just a "skateboarder." As long as he's a decent guy, my guess is they'll accept him - and you.

All The Best,
The Guidance Guy
