Afraid To Fly
Dear Guidance Guy,
I am going on a vacation with my family soon. The problem is that we are taking a plane and I'm afraid to fly.
What should I do?

Dear No Flying,
Most people are afraid of something because they associate some bad thing with it. In other words, when you think of flying you think about panic or fear or crashing, etc. And what happens is you get that "butterflies in the stomach" feeling.
If you had plenty of time I'd say the best thing to do is slowly change your association of flying to good things...excitement of going new places and other kinds of happiness. But since you don't have a lot of time the best things to do are to bring things that comfort you and make you feel good. Favorite candies, stuffed animals, music, games, holding someone's hand...do anything that you associate with good feelings. And think about the wonderful place you'll be going. Bombard yourself with positive messages, and have someone you trust do the same for you.
There are many good books on overcoming fear, some of which are written for kids. Check them out at your local library or bookstore when you get back from vacation.
And have a great time while you're there!
Thanks for your letter,
The Guidance Guy
