What was she thinking?

Dear Guidance Guy,

I would like to take some of my stress inside of me and write it on paper. I'm a tenth grader and have an English teacher who came to the school this year. She is a really hard teacher, and I especially have negative feelings against her when she picks on me (but that's a seperate issue).

It doesn't look like she minds when we complain about the access amount of work she gives. Okay, hear this: we have vacation now and come back on Tuesday. Because the school is taking us on an overnight Wednesday and Thursday when we had a murderous grammar test, she pushed it to Tuesday, the DAY we come back from vacation. She wants us not to have a vacation, just study, When we tried to talk to her about it, it seemed like she didn't even care and was actually laughing to herself. Mind you, grammar is my worst subject and I failed the first quiz. I'm so aggravated!!

Thanks for listening and hope to hear a reply soon,
Dina

Dear Dina,

Grammar may not be your best subject, but I bet you do well in creative writing. You have a very entertaining way of expressing your thoughts!

As a former teacher, this would not have been my choice. Besides the fact that it is a harsh thing to do to students, I don't think the results on the test will be as good. Very simply, students have gotten used to the idea of using vacation as VACATION. Books just don't get opened, unless it's for fun. But if the idea is to make sure you learn grammar, the strategy probably won't work.

Maybe your teacher is trying to make a point about studying, or maybe she's concerned the class is behind and she wants to push forward. Either way, as I said it wouldn't be my choice and I think most teachers would agree.

I don't see much you can do about it. The only revenge you can take on your teacher is to ace the test. If she has a nasty streak, give her a good "gotcha last" and drop an A+ on her!

Good Luck,
The Guidance Guy
