I'm Not Sporty!

Dear Guidance Guy,

I wanna tell my teacher something. She's not paying attention to non-sporty students. But if I do she will get offended.Non-Sporty Student

Dear Non-Sporty,

Many kids who aren't into sports feel like they don't get as much attention as the really good athletes. It could be true...when kids are younger one of the ways they get judged is by how good they are at sports.

You have a few choices here. One of them is to ask to see her after school and let her know how you feel. If you do this it's very important you don't get angry or accuse her of doing something wrong. Just let her know you feel like you get as much attention as some of the other kids. Using examples might be a good idea. It's OK to tell her if your feelings are hurt. That's about you, not her.

If you are too nervous, you can write her a note. Again, make sure you write about the behavior
and how it makes you feel, not that she's doing anything wrong. This is the best way to change
the way she pays attention to the non-sporty kids.

If you've tried both of these and nothing has happened you can talk to your parents, a school
counselor or even the principal. (Of course you can talk with your parents anytime.) But I think you will get the best results if she hears it directly from you.

You may not be "sporty" but you've got brains! It's pretty cool that you noticed that. I bet you'll be very good at working with people as you get older.

Good Luck,
The Guidance Guy
