Cursing Teacher, Upset Student

Dear Guidance Guy,

You might remember me when I told you about a specific health teacher. This is the teacher that had a problem with my junior health class. I emailed her and told her several times that when a student calls her names like"the b word" I get really really mad and angry. Sometimes it's harder on me when she gets really mad or angry. I almost cried two times in her class because I feel really hopeless when she gets mad at the students. So, please tell me what to do with this problem.

Your Friend,
Honest

Dear Honest,

It's very interesting that you emailed her with your concerns. In one way this was a good idea because it let you say what you really wanted without getting nervous in front of her. Of course you still need to be respectful because she is your teacher and deserves respect no matter what.

There are a couple of things going on here...if students are swearing at her in her class and she gets angry, she has lost control of her classroom. When a student swears at a teacher or calls them names, they should be removed from the class. I understand why you are upset...it's almost impossible to learn in a room where their is no respect.

Speaking to a counselor or principal may help in a couple of ways. If your teacher hasn't learned how to control the class yet, she needs help. She definitely needs to get better. A principal (or assistant principal) can help her with this, or at least tell her what to do when a student behaves badly.

But that's not your real problem. Your problem is how YOU deal with the craziness around you. Believe me, there will be more as you grow up! Try to understand that people will do weird things throughout your life. Sometimes you have to be in the same room as them. But you don't have to let them into your head. When the name-calling starts, try to focus on something good. Think about a really good teacher you have, or something you learned in her class that helped you.

And like I said, talking to a principal or counselor will help. I bet there are other students who are upset with this situation, not just you. You'll be doing them a favor too!

Thanks for a great letter,
The Guidance Guy
