Admissions Question

Dear Guidance Guy,

I'm a senior and I want to go to an art college next year. I have a B- average (2.7) I got a 1000 on the critical and math sections of the SAT and I don't know if I should take it again. I applied to three colleges so I hope I get into at least one. Should I take the SAT again?

Sincerely,
Regal Artist

Dear Regal,

There are a few things to look at here. The easiest thing to do is to check out the requirements of the colleges you're looking at. Each of them should give you the best advice as far as what they want.

No matter where you go for an art major, your PORTFOLIO will be extremely important. As I'm sure you know, this is the body of work you've done in whatever your specialty is (painting, drawing, prints, sculpture, etc). This needs to be sent to the school in whatever format they want. Getting it in by the deadline is critical, since reviewing a portfolio takes a great deal of time. Make sure you follow the due dates you're given.

If you are looking at traditional colleges that have art majors, the chances of grades and SAT's counting for more in the admissions process are greater. If you're looking at an art school that doesn't have other majors, they usually put less weight on grades and scores. So it really depends on where you're applying and what they tell you.

Best advice: ask an admissions counselor from each college. Not only will you get the right answer, they will get to know you as a person, which never hurts in the admissions process.

Good Luck!
The Guidance Guy
